Christmas is about spending time with your loved ones, being grateful for your health and giving and receiving. There are always people less fortunate than you and many people in need of an alternative treatment, to treat a condition or disease. But where should you start? How can you support them?

At any given time there are people living with diseases and conditions that predate COVID- 19 that have unfortunately had to take a back seat. The virus has placed a huge strain on all chronic disease as well as cancer services in the UK. It’s been felt in all areas of chronic care – from screening and diagnosis through to treatment. And new figures have revealed the sheer scale of this disruption – estimating that over 2 million people in the UK are waiting for screening, tests and treatments since lockdown began 10 weeks ago. [1] And this is just the data concerning cancer – one of many chronic conditions.

As well as physical diseases, neurological disorders are also on the rise and a recent study consisted of a proportion of people reporting moderate to severe symptoms of depression increased to 19.2% in June 2020, according to the latest statistics.[2]

The pandemic has also taken its toll on the drug death capital of Europe, Scotland. The latest figures in published 2020 are at 1,264 which is a 6% increase on 2018 and more than double the number of deaths in 2014. It is the worst rate recorded in Europe and about three and a half times the rate for England and Wales. [3]

Now you know the numbers, we’re going to let you know what you can do to help. Christmas is the time for giving and what’s more important than the gift of life and the health and happiness of your family? A lot more important than the latest Yeezy’s – especially after the year we have had.

Medicinal cannabis evidence shows it can help alleviate symptoms of various conditions such as depression, anxiety, severe arthritis, epilepsy and even cancer. You can support charities that undertake medicinal cannabis clinical trials or practitioners who prescribe patients with medicinal cannabis such as Sapphire Clinics, friends of the company who help many lead better qualities of life through prescription medicinal cannabis clinics in the UK.

A year ago only 18 prescriptions of medicinal cannabis had been given to patients in the UK, and this figure although not confirmed, isn’t meeting the demand as quickly as the nation needs it to. At Eco Equity, we work in partnership with the CDPRG (conservative drug policy reform group. The group exists to find and examine the evidence to support policymakers in reducing harm and securing the benefits of evidence-based drug policy. Supporting forums such as this are what keeps the government in tune with patients who need access.
