What is Hemp and why is it important?

Despite the common misconception, hemp is a completely different plant to marijuana: they both originate from the genus cannabis, but hemp is in no way related to the psychoactive stigma cannabis has. Now we’ve got you listening, let’s look at hemp in more detail.


Hemp is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant and it contains 0.3% of THC or less. Contrary to belief, it has been cultivated on planet earth for over 10,000 years. The history of hemp began over 6000 years ago in Central Asia, which is where the first hemp seeds were grown. The plant then made it to Europe in approximately 1,200 BC; soon after, it spread throughout the ancient world. Countries such as Spain, Chile and France have been growing hemp for over 700 years.
